Musicianship Lessons

MUSICIANSHIP CLASSES 2023

Why study Musicianship? Musicianship classes help to round out your child’s musical knowledge. In these classes students improve their reading skills and this is particularly important for students playing an instrument other than piano as they will become confident with bass reading.

Once the reading foundation is established we move on to scales and chords. These skills help students prepare for practical exams, especially for the general knowledge section where they will be asked about key changes and chord progressions. From here we move to writing rhythms and melodies and eventually harmonising melody lines. This is hugely beneficial for any student wanting to take music as an elective in high school and absolutely essential if they wish to study music at a tertiary level.

From grade 4 onwards classes begin to cover musical history and style. Again, this is a huge help with AMEB practical exams, elective and HSC music and tertiary studies.

AMEB MUSICIANSHIP PRE-REQUISITE LEVELS

From grade 6 onwards students sitting for instrumental exams need to have attained a specified level in Musicianship in order to get their certificate or diploma.

Requirements are as follows:

Grade 6 practical requires a pass in grade 2 Musicianship.

Grade 7 practical requires a pass in grade 3 Musicianship.

Grade 8 practical and Certificate of performance require a pass in grade 4 Musicianship.

AMusA practical requires a pass in grade 5 Musicianship.

LMusA requires a pass in grade 6 Musicianship.

WHAT TO BRING TO CLASS

Please buy the book How To Blitz Musicianship by Samantha Coates in your child’s grade.

Students will need a slim exercise book e.g.. 36 page (no sprial backs please) and a manuscript book (not a pad with loose leaves, they will get lost!)

Sharp pencils and an eraser are essential.

A water bottle may be brought in hot weather - no food in the studio please!

*Please make sure your child has been to the toilet and had a snack before classes.

COST

Tuition fees are based on recommendations of the Music Teacher’s Association of NSW. Fees reduce as class size increases. I prefer a class size of 3 to 5 students maximum as this allows me to give students more personal attention as needed.

Grades 1 - 3 have a 30 minute class each week for 9 weeks of the school term.

2 children per class - $225.00 per child

3 children per class - $195.00 per child

4 children per class - $150.00 per child

Grades 4 to 6 have a 45 minute class each week for 9 weeks of the school term.

2 children per class - $337.50 per child

3 children per class - $290.00 per child

4 children per class - $240.00 per child

Missed lessons will not be caught up or refunded, in the same way that private school fees are not altered if your child cannot attend. However, you are welcome to drop homework to the studio for marking if your child has missed a class and every effort will be made to help them catch up at the next lesson.

I look forward to working with you and your children!
